HD-150 Tone Problem

Okay, I replaced the filter caps and the usually recommended elecrolytics. I put in a new set of JJ 6L6's. Still the same problem - a harsh, raspy tone in the mid-range no matter how I adjust the knobs (low bass is good). Is that what this amp is supposed to sound like? (If I run my bass through a Sansamp BDDI into the MM input it sounds good). Any suggestions?

while the sound clarity that MM amps are so known for is due to a pronounced upper mid-range in the output, it's hard to put into words what an amp is supposed to sound like.
Are you saying that the tone controls have no affect on the sound? Is the problem the same on both channels?
When you say 'raspy' sound, does it mean that you are hearing distortion?
Have you tried with another instrument (bass/guitar/keyboard)?

Yeah, I know. It's a subjective thing. I use Gallien Krueger amps - their tone is clean and can be made nasty. I've played bass through Fender Showman amps and they can sound smooth and creamy until driven to distortion. My HD-150 always sounds a little raspy, although the tone controls do make changes to the sound, but never "smooth and creamy." It's the same on both channels. I have not tried other instruments since I don't play 'em, but have wondered if the tone would work for guitar. Will have to get "MR. Guitar" to try it.
